TriNet Employee Background Check

Challenge

For many TriNet customers, the employee hiring and onboarding experience was fragmented and inefficient. In the absence of built-in background check capabilities, client admins had to juggle multiple tools throughout the hiring process, introducing friction, inefficiencies, and increased hiring risks—particularly for fast-growing small and mid-sized businesses. Customers needed background checks integrated into the TriNet platform to enable a more streamlined, efficient, and compliant hiring workflow.

My Role

Between 2023 and 2024, I led the end-to-end design of the employee background check experience, working closely with a Product Manager, two UX Writers, a Researcher, and a cross-functional team of Software Engineers. I also partnered closely with Legal, Business, and other key stakeholders. My responsibilities spanned the full design and delivery lifecycle, from concept development and usability testing through iterative refinement, design handoff, and implementation.

Results

The employee background check experience was implemented and launched iteratively in two phases between 2023 and 2024. The redesigned TriNet experience fully integrates background checks into the hiring and onboarding workflow, allowing client admins to complete all hiring steps in a single platform. By automating the end-to-end process, TriNet allows client admins to pre-order background checks that are automatically triggered once a job offer is accepted. TriNet also leverages AI to provide personalized, compliant background check package recommendations aligned with each employee’s role and the customer's company policy.

The background check feature has enabled thousands of small and medium-sized businesses to place over 31,000 background checks through the integrated experience, generating millions of commission revenue from DISA, TriNet’s background check partner, and receiving highly positive customer feedback.
